What is the difference between Conventional IVF and Donor Egg IVF?
In the case of conventional IVF, the mother is given fertility drugs to produce eggs, once these eggs mature, they are taken out under the effect of anaesthesia with the help of an ultrasound machine. These eggs are, then, mixed with the sperms of the husband and left for fertilization.
Once the embryos are ready, these embryos could be transplanted in the intended mother or the gestational carrier or they can be kept frozen for later use.How are the Egg Donors selected or procured?
As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines, egg donation is an anonymous process. The egg donors are registered with the egg donation agencies.
1. These women are young and healthy, usually having at least one child of their own.
2. They are between the age of 21 and 35 years who are willing to donate eggs with the consent of their spouse.
3. They undergo a complete medical and psychological evaluation and are screened for infectious diseases like HIV and Hepatitis etc. What is the duration of Egg Donor IVF?
The entire procedure of the Egg Donor IVF can take upto 1-2 months depending upon the cycle length of the intended mother as well as the cycle length of the donor.
What happens in an Egg Donor IVF procedure?

- Once the Egg Donors are selected, the basic criteria are met, including, the height, the weight, the colour of skin and hair and blood group of the couple are matched with the Egg Donor. If required or if it is possible then the religion and education status can also be matched.
- Once the donor is finalised, with the help of pills, the menses of the egg donor and intended mother ( recepient ) are brought at the same time. The Egg donor goes through ovarian stimulation where she is given fertility drugs to produce eggs.
- The fertility specialist uses exogenous administration of estrogen and progesterone on the intended mother for endometrium preparation.
- Once these eggs mature, (around day 13 of egg donor’s cycle), eggs are retrieved under short general anaesthesia and then fertilised with the sperm of the intended father and then put into incubators to make the embryos.
- Once the embryos are ready, (5 days after egg collection), they can be transferred in the intended mother.
- After 12 days of embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to confirm pregnancy in the intended mother.
- The first ultrasound takes place roughly three weeks after the blood test that confirmed the pregnancy. By this time, the intended mother will have been pregnant for about six or seven weeks.
The whole procedure is executed legally with the consent of the donor and the consent of the couple. The identity of the Egg Donor is never revealed to the couple and vice versa. Egg Donor IVF in Mumbai is one of the most common fertility treatments due to its’ high success rates and because of the increasing awareness amongst the modern couples.
